Has it occurred to ANYONE that all the noise about prosecuting Bush & Co right now before the inauguration might be a ploy by some of the smart sneaky, underhanded Freepers or Repug operatives as a way, a la Rove, to gauge how deep the support is for prosecution of the Gang? That rec’ing up the question on Change.gov and getting Olbermann and Rachel to talk about it on the air before January 20th is the perfect way to give them enough of an idea which way the wind’s blowing to make the final decision about last minute pardons? Has that occurred to anyone?
They don’t want to give themselves pardons because it implies guilt. They’re trying to reinforce the precedents of Nixon’s ‘unitary executive’ and stick with what Cheeney’s been saying, ‘We don’t need pardons because we’ve done nothing wrong.’. They’d strongly prefer to stick with that if they think they can get away with it so they can set up precedent for the next round. But remember, these guys aren’t heros, for this cause or any other, they’re chickenhawks; if they really think that there’s any personal danger of being held accountable, they’ll scramble for the cover of pardons like the cockroaches that they are. They’re hoping that they can skate by on public apathy like Nixon did with Watergate and Reagan did with Iran Contra so that the next time they manage to get in control they can push the envelope even farther than they did this time. It’s been a pattern of each wave pushing further up the beach with a higher watermark than the time before. Watergate, Iran Contra, the S&L bailout, etc, etc. But they know they’re walking a fine line this time and that a lot of people are beyond turned off, they’re pissed off, and in a big way. Do you really think that the sneaky, underhanded sons of bitches of the past eight years aren’t doing some sort of reconnaissance to cover their collective asses and make sure that they’re safe?
I’m totally with everybody who’s pushing for accountability and I’m not talking about ‘commissions’ I want jail time for them as badly as anyone. But even if they’re not the ones trying to stir things up to get an indirect poll to base that last minute decision on, it’s stupid to let them know that we’re coming, that we mean it, that we’re loaded for bear and that we’re not going to take no for an answer. A lot of people have commented on the diaries and other blogs that we shouldn’t be loud about this right now, not ‘til after the inauguration when the ink runs out in the pardon pen. It’s not like anyone’s saying to wait until after the 2010 elections or after the first term, it’s two fucking weeks! Are we really so dumb or so undisciplined that we can’t think this through and keep our mouths shut for less than a month?
I’ll tell you what, if this ploy works and Bush pardons all of them on the last day, I’m not going to be polite, I’m going to say I fucking told you so to all the people who couldn't STFU and didn’t have the sense they were born with to think and hold off yakking about it and telegraphing our moves for a couple of fucking weeks. This isn’t one of Cheeney's canned hunts and it isn't Get Smart, we have one good chance to get them out in the open and without cover. We don’t want to miss it by THAT much. Be smart, people.
