Current republican governor of Rhode Island come to term limits in 2010. Without another republican at state level offices seems very difficult republicans have a decent candidate for this race.
Im optimist for this race. Republicans from Rhode Island seems weak and they are much years with republican governors for a blue state. In last years only D Carcieri governor and L Chafee can win a high level race in Rhode Island, and in 2006 elections L Chafee was defeated for senate and D Carcieri won with very low margin (51,0%-49,0%).
Can L Chafee win republican primaries after endorse B Obama for president? I think not. Maybe he run like independent? I think yes, but if democratic party run with a decent candidate not would have problems for win.
This is the list of possible candidates:
- Patrick Joseph Kennedy II: MA RI 1967 USHRep 95- .
- James R Langevin: RI 1964 USHRep 01- . RI Secretary of State 95-01.
- Robert A Weygand: MA RI 1948 USHRep 07-01. Lieutenant Governor of RI 93-97. Lost for senate 00.
- Elizabeth H Roberts: DC RI 1957 Lieutenant Governor of RI 07- .
- Richard A Licht: RI 1948 Lieutenant Governor of RI 85-89. Lost for Senate 88.
- Roger N Begin: RI 19?? Lieutenant Governor of RI 89-93. RI State Treasurer 85-89.
- Charles J Fogarty: RI 1955 Lieutenant Governor of RI 99-07. Lost for Governor 06.
- Patrick C Lynch: RI 1965 RI Attorney General 03- .
- A Ralph Mollis: RI 1961 RI Secretary of State 07- .
- Frank T Caprio: RI 1966 RI General Treasurer 07- .
In democrat side they are so good candidates for this race. Little state, but the list of possible candidates not is short and have young people.
The name of Elizabeth Roberts sound but they are more young candidates what can run too with so nice possibility of win. J Langevin, P Lynch, and more... If im not wrong P Lynch Attorney General is term limited too.
