Well, that didn't take long at all; at least one Illinois Democrat is already kicking the tires on a 2010 Senate race, regardless of whether Sen. Roland Burris (D-IL) runs for reelection or not.
The first one to openly consider such a race is Evanston Democrat Jan Schakowsky:
Rep. Janice Schakowsky (D-Ill.) is open to running against Roland Burris in 2010, potentially setting up a contested Democratic primary for the scandal-tainted Illinois Senate seat.
Schakowsky, leaving the Burris swearing-in ceremony Thursday, told Politico that "time will tell" whether she'd run or not. Asked whether she was ruling a run in or out, she said, "No."
Burris has not said whether he'd run in 2010, and some Democrats are reluctant to support him given that he's been appointed by Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who has been accused of corruption.
One has to figure that a primary challenge to Burris would be able to garner considerable support, especially from a veteran lawmaker and fundraiser like Jan Schakowsky. She hasn't committed to running yet, of course, but the fact that she won't rule out a run at this early stage indicates that Burris probably won't be safe in 2010. If Schakowsky doesn't run, it seems as though someone else probably will.
