In 2008, when most Americans were too busy to elect their first African American President, a small town in Mississippi was pontificating and finally preparing for their first integrated prom. Yes, up until 2008 Charleston High School in Mississippi held separate proms for blacks and whites. I kid you not!
But that is not the end of the story!
Get this: while there was an integrated prom, there still was a separate prom held for whites only, for those who didn’t want to participate in an integrated prom.
My question to Mississippi and Charleston High School administrators is this: Are you fucking kidding me?
My question to you is this: How could the school board, the residents, and the government allow such segregation, in this day and age? How could this have been allowed?
So why the school finally, yet, reluctantly agreed to host an integrated prom? Thanks to actor Morgan Freeman, who first made the offer to pay for the prom in 1997, as long as every one could go to that prom. The school finally took up on his offer in 2008.
Canadian director, Paul Saltzman, documented the event for the upcoming documentary, Prom Night in Mississippi.
Even as I write this, I can’t believe it!
I wonder how many other pockets of racism will be in existence, so openly, while Obama will be taking his oath for the highest office in the United States of America.
Shame on them! We must find them, call them out, and root them out.
