My earliest memory is watching a movie. That's how much movies are a part of my life. I owe a great deal of this to my father, who educated me about films in ways no one else could and introduced me to movies that I would otherwise never have seen.
There are so many amazing movies out there and many of them involve progressive politics. I would like to propose starting a weekly film club starting next Saturday.
Each week, we will discuss a film from the previous week. I will be happy to administrate this at first, but it would be great to see this balloon out and have other diarists talk about films. The point will be to watch films which are both entertaining and educational, films which help you think about where you stand on political and social issues.
Now we cannot always guarantee that everyone will get to see the film, but I would like to make it so that the widest number possibly can, so I want to, for now, restrict this to films available streaming via Netflix. If you have a web browser, a mac or PC and a broadband connection, you can watch the Netflix films online and it can cost as little as $4.99 a month.
I realize not everyone can afford this and I'm sorry, but hopefully your library will have the film so you can watch it in time. Next Friday, I will have a diary reviewing the film and attempting to show what lessons can be learned from it and we can all have done something fun together.
So, the first thing we need to do is pick our first movie!
Here are my suggestions with IMDB and Netflix links-
- To Kill a Mockingbird IMDB • Netflix
- Dog Day Afternoon IMDB • Netflix
- Gattaca IMDB • Netflix
- The Candidate IMDB • Netflix
- Persepolis IMDB • Netflix
Please vote on them and let me know which one you would like to discuss first... or if you hate the idea, feel free to spill the bile. We all the FSM's chillun 'round here.
