Sixty-four years ago, today, fluoride was poured into Grand Rapid's water supply to reduce tooth decay in children.  Effects to adults or other body parts were never examined. Today research shows ingested fluoride is doing more harm than good.

On January 25, 1945, sodium fluoride was slowly poured into Grand Rapids, Michigan's  public water supply to prove that fluoridation reduces children’s tooth decay. Five years into the experiment, things weren’t going as expected. Cavities declined equally in the non-fluoridated control city of Muskegon, too.

So to blur the truth or prove their expectation, Muskegon was fluoridated also. Children’s teeth were checked but not adults or other body parts.

Sixty-four years later, research exposes fluoride’s undesirable health effects to human organs and systems that weren’t considered in the 1940’s.  Many fluoridation-supporting organizations are quietly covering their legal aspects while publicly proclaiming “no problem; drink up.”

The American Dental Association admits in its Fluoridation Facts
booklet “decreased fluoride removal may occur among persons with severely impaired kidney function who may not be on kidney dialysis.”

The National Kidney Foundation withdrew its fluoridation support after a lawyer contacted them about their legal responsibility to tell the truth. They now advise that individuals with Chronic Kidney Disease be notified of fluoride’s danger to them.

The kidney-impaired retain more fluoride and risk skeletal fluorosis (an arthritic-type bone disease), fractures and severe enamel fluorosis, which may increase the risk of dental decay, reported the U.S. National Research Council in 2006.

The Centers for Disease Control concedes that fluoride’s beneficial effects are topical and not systemic, meaning there’s really no good reason to swallow fluoride.  Swallowing fluoride creates dental fluorosis – white spotted, yellow, brown and/or stained teeth – now afflicting up to 48% of school children, up to 4% moderate/severe, according to the CDC

The CDC’s 2001 fluoride recommendations says,  "The laboratory and epidemiologic research that has led to the better understanding of how fluoride prevents dental caries indicates that fluoride's predominant effect is posteruptive and topical ... Fluoride works primarily after teeth have erupted,..."

As of 2006, both the ADA and the CDC advise that fluoridated water not be mixed into concentrated infant formula because it unnecessarily puts babies at high risk of developing dental fluorosis.

So what’s happening today?

Grand Rapids children are showing high rates of tooth decay and dental fluorosis.

According to the Grand Rapids Press, one pediatric dentist said in 2007 “…we see children under the age of 2 with active decay…Rather than just a few cavities, we're seeing a lot of cavities. It's not unusual to see a child with 8 to 10 cavities."

Detroit Michigan is also fluoridated.

A study shows that, although fluoridated tap water is the most consumed item, 83% of low-income Detroit African-American adults, 14-years-old and over, have severe tooth decay.  Almost all Detroit ’s African-American 5-year-olds have cavities, most of them go unfilled.

In fact, there are cavity crises in all fluoridated cities and states (See: http://www.FluorideNews.blogspot.com) because 80% of dentists refuse Medicaid patients and over 108 million Americans lack dental insurance.

Our food supply has become so fluoride-polluted because of fluoridation and fluoride containing pesticide residues that the USDA had to create a database of food fluoride levels  to help Americans tally their daily fluoride intake to protect their bones and their children's teeth.

The NIH just gave a NJ researcher $3 million to find out why children get fluorosis from fluoridated water.  The Iowa Fluoride Study has used Iowa children as guinea pigs for years studying fluoride's adverse effects to their teeth and bones and whether or not fluoride has had any benefits, costing multi-million dollars of federal money.

The real solution is to stop fluoridation. It would save money, improve health and preserve health. It makes sense. The only reason that fluoridation continues are merely political and that's why fluoridation makes no sense.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Ah, naah. We're ok here. Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridated water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk, ice cream? Ice cream, Mandrake. Children's ice cream?

Hell, I only even clicked on this diary title because I caught that  on TCM the other night and I figured this would be good for a few laughs.

Hello? Hello, Dimitri? Listen, I can't hear too well, do you suppose you could turn the music down just a little? Oh, that's much better. Yes. Fine, I can hear you now, Dimitri. Clear and plain and coming through fine. I'm coming through fine too, eh? Good, then. Well then as you say we're both coming through fine. Good. Well it's good that you're fine and I'm fine. I agree with you. It's great to be fine. laughs Now then Dimitri. You know how we've always talked about the possibility of something going wrong with the bomb. The bomb, Dimitri. The hydrogen bomb. Well now what happened is, one of our base commanders, he had a sort of, well he went a little funny in the head. You know. Just a little... funny. And uh, he went and did a silly thing. Well, I'll tell you what he did, he ordered his planes... to attack your country. Well let me finish, Dimitri. Let me finish, Dimitri. Well, listen, how do you think I feel about it? Can you imagine how I feel about it, Dimitri? Why do you think I'm calling you? Just to say hello? Of course I like to speak to you. Of course I like to say hello. Not now, but any time, Dimitri. I'm just calling up to tell you something terrible has happened. It's a friendly call. Of course it's a friendly call. Listen, if it wasn't friendly, ... you probably wouldn't have even got it.

  •  Fluorosis is extremely uncommon in the (19+ / 0-)

United States. The risks to your health due to Fluoridated water is extremely low. You're more at risk from the other much more lethal chemicals in your home.

Just because water is fluoridated doesn't mean it's supposed to fix problems. People need to take care of their teeth. Fluoridated water helps them do that it isn't the Omega.

Also most of your assertions about Fluoride are completely bogus.

There has been an increase in Dental Fluorosis in areas that don't fluoridate their water. I guess we blame that on magic fluoride beings falling from the sky.

    Junk science.

I wholeheartedly agree that we should NOT have fluoride in the water.  If people want the medication, children can easily get fluoride in tablets.  They are very reasonable and only those who feel they would derive benefit from the medicine would use it.
As for fluorosis, it is rampant.  The children of my parents who play by the rules have more serious cases than the ones with parents who often forgot to give their kids the vitamins.
Just so you know, most hygienists are now opposed to fluoride since we recognize that it does little good and does have the negative effect.  The shift is happening, in the interim, use a water filter.  It gets the fluoride out.
Thanks for posting this.  Once again, it is way ahead of where many people in this site worship but you are writing about where dentistry is heading as opposed to its past.

Up to 48% of US school children sport dental fluorosis (discolored & disfigured teeth) according to the Centers for Disease Control

Tooth decay is an epidemic, according to the US Surgeon general.  Pockets of the US have tooth decay similar to that of third world countries.

Fluoride is neither a nutrient nor essential for heatlhy teeth and must be removed from water supplies

If you are the original author, you have serious problems understanding scientific studies.  If you aren't the author, I would distance yourself quickly from this and delete this diary.

Your own links to the ADA and the scientific literature completely contradict your premise.  This was my favorite part from the ADA:
      Photobucket

And that study of people with cavities?  My favorite part is this:

...Apart from tapwater, the most frequently consumed food item by adults of all ages was soft drinks; 19% of all energy from sugar came from soft drinks alone. In both the bivariate analyses and in the regression model, frequency of soft drink consumption and the presence of gingival plaque deposits were significantly associated with caries...

Why don't you pick a better battle--such as nutrition for impoverished people?

I agree that the real way to fight tooth decay is with better diets.  However, since I don't have the power to force-feed poor people their 7 - 9 servings of F&V daily and the government certainly isn't even telling people that their tooth decay is a result of poor diet, the only thing that can be done is to educate people about how fluoride is harmful to health and teeth - especially to people who eat poor diets.

that the risks are low.  But so are the benefits.  Given that situation, statistically speaking it would take huge sample sizes and a hell of a lot of research money to actually prove anything.  IMHO, the best policy in situations where definitive information is prohibitively expensive, is to inform clearly and make personal choices to do or not to do simple.  Government has no business mandating unknowable risks for unknowable benefits.
