AWARDSANDHONORS.COM (http://www.awardsandhonors.com)- There were few major surprises tonight as Slumdog Millionaire, 30 Rock, John Adams and Mad Men captured major awards at the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Unlike other awards shows, where winners are voted on by executives, industry insiders, critics and even the general public, the Screen Actors Guild Awards are only voted on by fellow actors.
In the film awards, Slumdog Millionaire captured the award for Best Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, SAG’s equivalent of the Best Picture award.
Meryl Streep also came up big, taking Best Actress honors, and then declared "There is no such thing as a Best Actress nor is there any such thing as a Best Living Actress."
Best Actor honors were to Sean Penn for his performance as Harvey Milk in Milk. Penn noted the performances of his fellow nominees, but also gave kudos to the performances of several non-nominees including Benicio Del Toro in Che.
Kate Winslet (The Reader) and Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight), took home Best Supporting honors, as they had at the Golden Globes. Winslet’s performance in The Reader has been nominated for a Best Actress Oscar.
The most nominated film was Doubt, with five nominations, but Streep won the only "actor" award for the film.
For the second straight year, 30 Rock dominated the comedy acting awards, with Alec Baldwin taking home the Outstanding Actor Award, Tina Fey, Outstanding Actress, and the cast taking home the award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
The epic mini-series John Adams garnered Best Actress honors for Laura Linney and a Best Actor nod for Paul Giamatti.
Mad Men took the honors for an Ensemble in a Drama Series, while Hugh Laurie was surprised to have taken Best Actor Honors for House.
"I bet $100 that James Spader would win," Laurie deadpanned.
Sally Field, famous for her Oscar acceptance speech, was far more controlled in accepting her award for Best Actress in a Drama for her work on Brothers and Sisters.
James Earl Jones was honored with the Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
