John Updike, one of the most brilliant and prolific writers of the last 50 years, died today at the age of 76.
Updike, who captured the essence of postwar middle class America with a keen eye and masterful wit, had been battling lung cancer. Updike was one of the most honored writers in the world. His awards included two Pulitzer Prizes for Fiction, two National Book Awards, the O. Henry Prize, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Gold Medal in Fiction, the National Medal of Arts and the Pen/Faulkner Award.
Updike was best known for his series of four "Rabbit" books, which chronicled the adventures and misadventures of Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, a one-time star athlete in high school, who learned to cope with the realities of work, family, love and lust. His books "Rabbit Redux" and "Rabbit at Rest" earned him his Pulitzer Prizes.
