This morning on Face the Nation, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell stated that the current stimulus package working its way through the Senate is not likely to pass. Bob Schieffer then asked him if Republicans would filibuster the legislation.
McConnell's response:
Well, that term is thrown around a lot. In the Senate, it routinely takes 60 votes to do almost everything. It doesn't necessarily mean you're trying to slow a bill down. But a super-majority is required for virtually everything in the Senate. And certainly for something that's close to a trillion dollar spending bill, it will.
Screw you, Mitch.
First of all, part of this is Harry Reid's fault. His unwillingness to force obstructionist Republicans to literally filibuster when they're unwilling to vote for cloture is ridiculous. Reid's spinelessness over the past two years has allowed the GOP to redefine the filibuster.
But let's be clear -- Herbert Hoover McConnell is threatening to filibuster the economic recovery package of a newly elected president with an 80% approval rating. It's essential that the media gets this. The Republicans are maneuvering themselves into a position of irresponsibility that should destroy their credibility for decades to come.
McConnell also stated twice that he's sure Obama is "embarrassed" by the stimulus package. Really?! Somebody in the administration needs to slap this asshole down.
Again, screw you, Mitch. Go ahead and filibuster. I want to see your sorry excuse for a political party go down in flames...permanently.
