Let's take a trip back to memory lane. Remember when Governor Davis was in office and warned the people of California that the state was in financial trouble, and could be bankrupt if corrections were not made.
These corrections included raising taxes. He was honest, and wanted all of us to face reality, deal with it, and turn things around before it was too late. And then a couple of wealthy Republicans came up with a plan to recall Governor Gray Davis. That plan included a movie star.
Here is what Arnold Schwarzenegger was spewing at the time.
"There is another way you can tell you're a Republican. You have faith in free enterprise, faith in the resourcefulness of the American people ...and faith in the U.S. economy. To those critics who are so pessimistic about our economy, I say: Don't be economic girlie men!"
I know you remember that. It was too easy to have Governor Gray Davis recalled. Every Republican that receives their Tax Refund IOU rather than an actual check they can take to the bank can remember the words "Economic Girlie Men"
I hope Gray Davis know's there are a lot of people who are thinking about him. He wanted to do the right thing.
There we were in California. We had a brilliant Governor in office. Legally elected to be there. Governor Gray Davis.
He was interested in correcting some financial errors that the state of California needed to do.
If these financial errors were not corrected the entire state would go bankrupt. California will have to shut down essential operations. California will have to issue IOU's rather than paying people back their state tax refunds. Somehow, a couple of wealthy republicans saw an opportunity to have our elected Governor removed from office. They knew that the reality of fixing the financial status of the state could be easily replaced by putting a movie star in Office. A Republican one.
So, Reality was not as appealing as a Movie Star.
Now here we are. California is in the exact spot Governor Gray Davis warned us about. Governor Gray Davis only wanted to tell it like it is, and deal with it. He wanted to do what was needed.
I can only hope that when Republicans get their IOU check, not their refund checks, they take a moment to thank everybody who thought it was a better idea to have a movie star take over, rather than to keep Governor Gray Davis in office, and allow him to do the job he was elected to do in the first place.
Something needs to be changed with the whole idea of a "Recall" This won't be the last time an elected official gets removed from office.
I also think Governor Schwarzenegger should call Gray Davis, and invite him over to take over where he left off.
