This action is particularly suited for anyone living in Michigan...but really, we all should chime in and say thanks for some seriously courageous leadership on energy issues.
As was noted in Bruce Nilles' diary Friday, last week in her State of the State address Gov. Granholm announced some really bold steps on energy. She's going to make any new coal-fired power plants justify the need for their energy to state regulators -- and push forward with alternative energy and efficiency programs that will save money for energy consumers and help put the people of her state back to work.
Here at CREDO, we think that kind of leadership needs recognition and praise. So we put together a petition of thanks for Governor Granholm on our CREDO Action site -- why not take two minutes & sign?
Attached below is the text of the newsletter we sent out yesterday to our Michigan folks...but as I mentioned, you don't have to be a Michigan resident to recognize -- and thank -- some serious leadership on energy. We're going to need a LOT more of it if we're going to solve the climate crisis. So please sign the petition to let Gov. Granholm know we're on her side.

This past week, Governor Granholm announced a major step forward for Michigan's energy future. Her administration will now require all new coal-fired power plants in Michigan to forecast energy demand and prove that the energy they propose to produce will actually be needed. She also called for a major program to save energy, lower consumers' costs and put Michiganders back to work by weatherizing homes and schools.
This is real energy leadership — and is exactly the kind of decision we'll need a lot more of, if we're going to solve our economic and climate crises. Unfortunately — and predictably — the governor has now come under attack from the fossil-fuel companies and their allies in the Michigan legislature. We need to tell Governor Granholm that we support her decision and applaud her leadership.

It should be clear by now to everyone that in reality, there's no such thing as "clean coal" — and that continuing to build more coal-fired plants would be a complete disaster for our climate. Renewable energy technologies such as wind and solar, as well as energy efficiency and conservation programs, can easily meet our energy needs for the foreseeable future.
Nothing less than Michigan's energy future is at stake here. Will that future be based on the clean, renewable, job-creating technologies of the future? Or the dirty fossil fuels of the past? Governor Granholm has taken a big step in the right direction, but she'll need our help on the journey.
Click here to tell Governor Granholm that you support her decision — and that she should continue to stand firm for a clean energy future for Michigan.
Thank you for working to build a better world.
