In the run-up to last November's election, Proposition 8 supporters ProtectMarriage.com tried to blackmail opponents of their initiative to kill gay marriage. People who donated to No On 8 received letters stating their names would be revealed to the public, unless they gave a like amount (note the careful avoidance of the word "equal") to the Hate Amendment.
Here's an article on the threat:

Most people who got the foul thing said, as did the Duke Of Wellington during a blackmail attempt: "Publish and be damned". As a matter of fact, Apple stepped up to the plate with $100,000 to No On 8 after this was reported, as did a number of others.
Now the shoe is on the other foot. The same rightwingers who want to deny equal marriage rights to gay people, and tried strong-arming their opponents, now want to hide their donor lists. These are the same people who threaten to recall judges based on how they would rule on the constitutionality of the Prop 8 amendment. They claim death threats and harassment, but as we've seen during the campaign they're perfectly willing to lie for their cause. I for one doubt very much their claims are anywhere near the truth. Let's see the police reports.
What really concerns them is turnabout on their threats of boycotts and public shaming, but why should GLBT people spend their dollars to support someone who wants to make them second class citizens? It seems the anti-equality forces do not have the courage of their convictions. Funny how the same folks rightwingers like to call pansies are the ones who have the guts to stand up for their position, while the rock-ribbed stalwart traditional values mob try to scuttle away under cover of anonymity.
