Jeff Farias is reporting on thejefffariasshow.com on his internet radio show that NOVA M radio is apparently No More!  Also, on his web page: thejefffariasshow.com  he list near the advertising section different sources reporting on the NOVA M Radio situation.  Also, a lawsuit is mentioned in which they are being sued for allegedly smearing the reputation of John Manzo and not paying into his state and federal taxes.  For those of you who doubted the beginning of this story when I reported it, I told you that what was left of NOVA M Radio would be going down soon and now, apparently they are.  Apparently, there will be a re-naming of whatever is left but we will see soon enough, what if anything survives that is still owned by the original owners of NOVA M radio.

Now, we need to get Jeff Farias, Randi Rhodes and Mike Malloy back on the air with a progressive radio station and network and for sure not with the owners of the former NOVA M or Air America!  Please go to thejefffariasshow.com bringjeffback.com or the friends of jeff farias show at Facebook.com .  We need to spread the word and let Thom Hartman know that even if he goes to the Jones syndication organization that he should join forces with other progressives who will not hold him back.
Ask the advertisers of the former NOVA M to help support the future ask them to help support thejefffariasshow.com .

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I just refound Jeff Farias yesterday and only seconds ago sent him a contribution. I turned in a late today so I missed the announcement. Any word on what's happened with Mike Malloy? I was very happy Nova M picked up Mike and Randi. And by doing so, I became a regular listener of Jeff. I don't know what it takes to get, and keep, progressive voices on air, but I'm trying to do my part!

    •  This is far more serious than Randi going off air (2+ / 0-)

Sheldon and Anita Drobny, who founded Nova M, have transferred the assets to a company called On Second Thought LLC, which is controlled by Mike Newcomb, another radio personality who was once a partner in Nova M.

And there are very serious and plausible reports that Sheldon Drobny recently attempted suicide.  This was reported on Mike Stern's site, which is politically neutral, as well as on Brian Maloney's "Radio Equalizer."  There is a denial from Anita Drobny, but I don't find it convincing...

Please read my diary about all this here.  This story runs a lot deeper than who will run Randi's show.

    TO ALL:

NOVA M RADIO HAS NOT YET CORRECTED THE PROBLEM THAT HAS KEPT ME OFF THE AIR DESPITE MY STRONG DESIRE AND READINESS TO BROADCAST MY SHOW.  RESPECTING THE EMPLOYER-EMPLOYEE RELATIONSHIP THAT HAS EXISTED BETWEEN NOVA M AND ME, AND EXPECTING THE SOLUTION TO BE QUICKLY ACHIEVED, DETAiLS OF THE DISABLING EVENT WERE WITHHELD IN GOOD FAITH.  BUT I CAN TELL YOU THIS MUCH: YOU SHOULD NOT BELIEVE ANY STATEMENT IMPLICATING ME AS BEING IN ANY WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DISRUPTION IN THE RANDI RHODES SHOW.   THERE IS NO TRUTH TO ANY SUCH MESSAGE.  IN FACT, I DID EVERYTHING IN MY POWER TO HELP NOVA M MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO RETURN.

IN LIGHT OF MOST RECENT DEVELOPMENTS, MY SHOW WILL BE SEEKING A NEW HOME.  I WOULD ASK FOR YOUR CONTINUED PATIENCE AND INDULGENCE IN RESPECTING MY RIGHTS DURING THIS TIME.  YOUR UNWAVERING SUPPORT IS CHERISHED.  THANK YOU.

  •  That's the business (0+ / 0-)

The weren't making the money and ratings. They were - without much class - shown the door.

The radio industry is projected to lose 13% of revenues this quarter. The last three quarters were horrible as well. No one is advertising with us. And when 70% of your revenues comes from that, it's very bad news.

Progressive radio, sorry to say it, hasn't worked. It was handled badly from the start. Most of the shows weren't very good.

I know this because I was at Air America in the beginning. I know this business very well.

    •  okay (0+ / 0-)

        •  Sponsor boycott. (0+ / 0-)

In this economic climate, I doubt the sponsors are going to be terribly committed, especially to a radio network that appears headed for bankruptcy like Clear Channel (which carries Rush Limbaugh out here in L.A.).

          •  CC debt is a problem but not going away (0+ / 0-)

Debt is a huge problem at a lot of radio companies. CC even more so because of their buying spree years back.

However, their talk properties - although struggling - are doing okay for them.

Revenues, otoh, are a bigger problem for everybody.

In short, CC isn't going anywhere. They're restructuring and they have a huge deal with Microsoft that's about to take off.

          •  Funny thing about a sponsor boycott idea (0+ / 0-)

The same national radio advertisers you hear on, for example Ed Shultz's show can be hear sponsoring Rush's show.  Just bounce between the two shows, which are on at the same time in most markets, and you will hear what I mean.

So to boycott conservative radio sponsors is to boycott progressive radio sponsors in many cases.

As much as anything else, this is an audience issue.  Frankly, progressives seek out a more diverse pool of media sources than talk radio.

      •  They're not. (0+ / 0-)

Schultz has been bounced from station to station in L.A. I don't think he's on here anymore.

Hartmann isn't on the radar here.

It hasn't worked. Nova is out of business and Air America is a joke.

        •  The problem you outline.... (0+ / 0-)

.... is not that progressive radio hasn't worked.

Stephanie Miller's show was pulled in Cleveland, even though she was getting decent ratings. It was replaced with a sports format, and it tanked. I bet you that Shultz's ratings were pretty good before he got pulled.

You're confusing two issues. Nobody's saying that Nova-M or Air America were well managed. The problem is one of ownership. When you have conservative-owned media outlets dominating the airwaves, and not even signing up progressive talk, that's the problem.

When you have 90% of talk radio being of the rabid right wing format, that's a problem.

When you have a city like San Francisco with only ONE progressive radio station, and three broadcasting conservative talk shows, that's a problem.

(BTW, San Francisco's Green 960 is doing VERY well in the ratings, so that proves you wrong).

          •  Show me the numbers then. (0+ / 0-)

Go to Arbitron and look at their PPM numbers in the Top 25 markets in the country. Show me the demographic breakdowns, tsl and the rest. Hell, you can look at every market you desire.  I'm telling you, you're wrong.

Schultz ratings in L.A were not that good. If he were ratings gold, he would have never bounced from station to station here.

Show me the numbers. I'll start by saying that anything under a 5 is not good number in our business.

            Show me.

            •  Also... (0+ / 0-)

When you have 90% of talk radio being of the rabid right wing format, that's a problem.

The business I work in doesn't care about what should be - it only cares about what works.

A progressive station that does well in SF - what a shock.

              Oh wait...

San Francisco KKGN - Green 960 - ranked 28th overall in the last PPM. They were a 1.2 - up from a 0.9. Those are horrible numbers.

              •  I have to agree about ratings or lack of them (0+ / 0-)

There are success stories for Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz in some markets, but most of the other progressives on radio including Hartmann draw weak numbers.

That said, part of the weak ratings is that the progressive stations are carried on weaker stations with lower wattage.  When they can show reason to get bumped up (like in Chicago) it happens.  When they can't, they languish on 1000 watt AM signals that dial down at sunset.

dissent not only welcome... but encouraged

        •  It hasn't worked. (0+ / 0-)

The radio stations themselves, Nova M and Air America are not radio stations, are (thanks to Bill Clinton) almost all owned by Clear Chanel, a right-wing company. They don't want Liberal Talk to succeed.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Randi Rhodes' on-air home for less than a year will shut its doors.  In an email message of February 17th from counsel for Nova M Radio, Inc. to Randi’s entertainment attorney, Robert V. Gaulin, the company is said to have been advised to file for bankruptcy protection next week.  All payroll deposits were reversed on Tuesday, leaving Nova's employees unpaid for the past two weeks.  On Sunday, Nova received a letter from Mr. Gaulin asserting that the contract with Ms. Rhodes was terminated due to material breaches and other reasons.  Ms. Rhodes had not broadcast for over a week prior to this time, a situation which was diplomatically referred to as a "problem" that was solely within Nova's control to solve.  A few days earlier, Sheldon Drobny, founder of Nova M, and a co-founder of Air America Radio, attempted suicide and is hospitalized in Chicago.

Mr. Gaulin indicated on Randi's behalf that "We saw this coming, but are most saddened by the tragic news regarding Sheldon Drobny.  Randi is devastated by the impact of these events upon her fiercely loyal audience, affiliates and sponsors.  Discussions are already being conducted for Randi's swift return to the air.  Stay tuned..."

    Thank you

would quit taking shots at the few progressive voices we have on the airwaves. You may not like one or another, but Randi has a big following and all of them, like them or not, help to get the progressive ideas out to others. I'd like to think we can support them all even if we don't particularly enjoy listening to one of them!

republicans do you know that want Hannity or Limbaugh removed from the air? I know quite a few who may not particularly listen to one or the other, but all the republicans I know support them fully and that includes the even more radical Micheal Savage.

If we get rid of every progressive voice that isn't liked by a handful of progressives, then we won't have ANY progressive voices on the air!

And quite frankly, I would think that if so many progressives love Randi so much, they'd be listening to her in droves and NovaM would be kicking butt.  Not going bankrupt.

Let's take San Francisco for example.

In the last Arbitron PPM numbers, KKGN - Green 960 - had a 1.2 rating overall(6+). Check out Arbitron if you don't believe me. I'll check into the 25-54 numbers if you want.

That's a progressive station, in San Francisco, that's not doing to well with Nova and AA shows.

Don't get mad just because the facts don't fit your dreams.

I was at AAR when they had their first belly up with Evan Cohen. It was badly run and the shows were not very good.

  •  Face it, progressives aren't succeeding in radio (0+ / 0-)

Despite all the need for liberal perspective during the Bush years we have had a very uneven track record in getting talent established in profitable markets.

I propose that liberals are far more interested in the interactive potential of the internet than in the passive audience experience of A.M. radio.

We owned the internet this last election cycle. The conservatives owed the radio waves.  Which one was more creative, more responsive, more galvanizing, more participatory, more grass-roots.

Radio is for music or its for indoctrination.
