When I went to bed last night, the news was saying that the California Senate would be pulling another all nighter to get a budget passed. Well, the gop voted for something; unfortunately, it was not a budget.
California has not had a budget for over one hundred days. The only thing needed to pass a budget is one gop vote. The obstructionist goppers have decided to make a stand on no new taxes even though the state is facing a $42 billion deficit.
The plan before the Senate includes about $15 billion in cuts, about $15 billion in tax increases, and about $12 in borrowing to get the state through a very tough time for everyone in every state. The Assembly has already had three goppers cross the aisle to get the deal done. However, the gopper senators have only had two heroes cross the aisle. One more is desparately needed.
Last night around eleven o'clock PST, the goppers decided that they should change leadership instead of cooperate to get a deal done. Dave Cogdill of Modesto was voted out of his leadership position because he negotiated with the Democrats and came up with the budget. They voted in Dennis Hollingsworth of Murrieta and are now talking about renegotiating an entirely new budget that does not include any revenue increases. They want to put the entire budget shortfall on the backs of the retired, the disabled, and the state's children by cutting healthcare and education. What a bunch of ...
