The lady (let's call her Lessie) who helps out at our house every other week just told me that, by court order, she has no driving privileges FOR LIFE.
This is happening in Florida. Is that constitutional? I understand that driving is a "privilege not a right."
But consider the effects of such a sentence. In effect, the judge who passed that sentence, just consigned a human being to a life of menial work regardless of their inherent abilities.
Such a sentence assumes zero ability for a litigant to reform themselves. In fact, it discourages them from reform. This seems wrong! Don't you think it should be changed?
Lessie is computer literate, bright and a mother of two children. One of her children has problems with authority, the other is a model citzen (at 19 a qualified EMT going to college).
Lessie is no idiot, a good parent. Yes, in her earlier years, she had five DUIs ... yes five. A judge, in the midst of the MADD craze, sentenced her to life without a driver's license. She has not driven in 18 years. Imagine that ... wear those shoes.
