The conversation over the past two weeks has become increasingly dominated by an obese drug addict with a declining audience in an increasingly archaic medium and you know what - we're prolonging it.

Every utterance from Rush Limbaugh doesn't deserve a response from us or a daily diary list chock full 'o hand-wringing diaries about how terrible Rush is, how he's a big fat idiot and more. We've known this for some time now - Senator Al Franken told us this a long, long time ago and you know what? Nothing has changed in the interim except more and more people realize that Rush is a big, fat idiot. Rush is still fat (and getting bigger) and he's even more of an idiot because as the economy collapses his daily screechings are losing their potency other than for his faithful few - who vote Republican anyway.

Folks - we're truly witnessing the bellows of dying elephants. We can never let down our guard nor must we remain silent in the face of provocation, but Rush is an increasingly marginalized figure in an increasingly marginalized and regionalized party. His views are out-of-sync with an ever more diverse and activist populace and he knows it - which is why he uses every chance he can to get additional media exposure. He's like the male version of Ann Coulter and he knows it. Why are we feeding the beast?

Let's focus on our successes at the legislative and executive level. We've passed an enormous stimulus package with tax cuts for the poor and middle class. The worst of Bush's executive orders have been reversed and the rest will soon. SCHIP is now law and additional progressive legislation is on its way. We're closer and closer to exposing the truth about torture and civil liberties violations. And better yet the American people are fully behind us while they intensely dislike Limbaugh and the policies he espouses.

So keep writing diaries on him, or don't - who cares? Personally I feel that by ignoring him we're more likely to increase the chances of his irrelevance than by hanging on his every utterance and further publicizing them. Regardless - Rush is in the eleventh hour of his long kiss goodnight with the American public - of that I'm 100% sure.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
