As he has done so often in the past, Russ Feingold yesterday cut through the clutter, took down the temperature and spoke simple sense.
On a day when Evan Bayh was being whacked like a pinata for questioning the omnibus spending bill, Feingold stood before a camera, held up the bill and said, "I will not be voting for this". As he spoke, he said the simple truth that a bill passed this year is THIS year's business, and that he is serious about doing this year's business, as he always is.
Like an alcoholic ready to spree but promising himself to be temperate tomorrow, our congresspersons will whoop through this mess while assuring us that tomorrow will bring new-found discipline. Yesterday Feingold called them out, and it was refreshing.
