Yesterday, Eric Kleefeld over at Talking Points Memo refreshed my recollection about one of my "favorite" senators, namely David Vitter (R-LA). Eric notes in his "Vitter Fights Family Planning Money In Omnibus" that Senator Vitter, a champion of family values, was caught up in the DC Madam sex scandal a year and a half ago. He has now submitted an amendment to the omnibus spending bill that would prevent funding for family planning.
Though Senator Vitter, one of the Three Horsemen of the Hypocrisy came clean with his doting wife and Jesus, it hasn’t changed his views toward other women and their right to choose contraception, abortion or any other sort of family planning decision.
In a 2007 article in the Washington Post, reporter Shailagh Murray quoted Vitter as saying "This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible. Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling. Out of respect for my family, I will keep my discussion of the matter there — with God and them. But I certainly offer my deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way."
Praise Jesus for his forgiveness.
So what is the good senator from Louisiana up to today?
As TPM reports, "Vitter is offering an amendment to the omnibus, forbidding the distribution of any public money to Planned Parenthood."
Therein lies my point.
