This isn't all of you but I hope those to whom this label applies reads this diary, flames it for all it's worth and go back to sipping chai tea in their waistcoats-- as long as the words have been said.
I am disgusted that when I read a diary about a woman from Barbados trying to explain the influence of domestic violence on her nation and the singer, Rihanna, she was meet with derision about her choice of subject matter (those who derided her attempt to get across cultural understanding simply didn't read the post-- or have very sad, antiquated ideas on abuse and the complexes that arise around it).
Well, you don't know who Rihanna and Chris Brown are? Guess what: your kids do.
College agers do.
People who watch television do.
Black people do.
And if you don't? Screw. You.
If you don't know the story, I'll give you the long and short: a young singer named Rihanna was brutally beaten by her boyfriend, another singer, named Chris Brown (himself 19 and raised in an abusive household).
She was beaten. And she went back to be with Chris, shocking much of the mundane and judgemental world.
You say this is a political site, not a place to speak of celebrity gossip? If you don't think this story is important, then you dismiss the fact that domestic violence is a subject rarely brought into the celebrity realm and left open for national dialogue-- and you ignore that it's women's history month, a month we should be exploring this often ignored facet of American life.
hotchimera tried to bring insight into abuse victems and a handful of Kossacks could only break away from ruminating about an economy we have little control of, or what's Rush been saying lately, to sit down and think about a situation that is part of every day life and should not be.
This is a big cultural touchstone, a moment where feminists may look at popular support for Brown (which exists), where we may ask ourselves how and why Rihanna, a wealthy, beautiful and talented young woman-- a woman who defies many of the stereotypes of financial/parental dependence one has for abuse victems-- would go back into the arms of a monster... or how said monster hates his own father for treating his mother the same way could possibly beat the woman he loves so brutally.... and people react around here with snobbery and raised noses?
Fuck you people, those who go out of their way to make this site look like the Liberal Elite people accuse us of being. Those who like to write diaries about letting the economy tank, just to make a point to the rich; those who don't see the "value" is discussing "pop culture."
Fuck you and your WHATZITS WOOZLES AND CAT PICTURE BULLSHIT.
There are many levels of importance and if you can only see your own, then try a find a less diverse niche site to haunt.
