Uh-oh -- Family values alert! Little Trigg Tripp's parents, little Bristol and little Levi, aren't destined for a wedding after all. Could it be that failures in sex education and birth control aren't really a good basis for a marriage?
Edit: Okay, Tripp, not Trigg. Or Trizz or Tribb or Trixx, whatever the next new name in Wasilla is.
From the AP:
WASILLA, Alaska (AP) -- The engagement is off for the teenage daughter of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and the father of her baby. Levi Johnston told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he and Bristol Palin mutually decided ''a while ago'' to end their relationship. The 19-year-old Johnston declined to elaborate.
So, let's see. Just to recap. Abstinance-only education, predicated on the idea that hormonal teen waters can be made to end their surging and flow backwards if only we pray hard enough (and ignorant about every other aspect of sexuality) turns out to be demonstrably in effective as a form of birth control. And our favorite illustration of that -- well, Levi stood up during the heat of the campaign and announced he'd Make An Honest Woman of that there Bristol, just like every Republican in the country was praying he would, just to get the issue back out of the campaign.
Unfortunately the Thrilla from Wasilla didn't thrill us enough, and Levi's promise went the place unfulfilled campaign promises go.
Will Palin's audience learn anything from this? Anything about the unreality of "abstinence only" education -- a kind of "education" based on keeping the kids ignorant -- and its cost in teen pregnancies, unwed mothers, and shotgun weddings?
Well, if they haven't learned by now, why expect it?
