This isn't really a diary, so much as tossing out an idea. Maybe even a call to action.
My dad called me today asking if there was a way to make a suggestion to The White House. I told him about the Contact Us link on whitehouse.gov, and suggested he use that.
The idea he wanted to share seems simple. Maybe even obvious.
In the past, when the United States has needed to finance debt, such as in World War I and World War II, they asked the American people to finance it by purchasing bonds.
So, why not do it again?
So much of our debt is being taken on by foreign entities. Why not try to do our part, even if it's just a drop in the bucket? 10 dollar a month donations to Barack Obama for President was a drop in the bucket. But it all added up to quite a bit.
My dad told me he's started to buy 250 dollars in bonds every month, starting back in January. I'm going to start doing 50 dollars a month this month.
They're not exactly the biggest returns, but isn't that part of the mentality that got us into this mess in the first place?
A Google Search turns up dozens of "Buy War Bonds" posters.
They have a slight tinge of propaganda to them, but they make sense. In a time of crisis, ask the American People to invest in their own future by investing in their own government.
I hope you'll consider buying bonds yourself. But also, sending the idea of a Savings Bonds ad campaign to the White House. If lots of the same suggestion comes in, maybe they'll pay more attention to it.
I'll leave you now with some good old fashioned propaganda:
