So about a year ago, I was watching TV. It was late at night and one of those information shows was on about how you can start your own alpaca farm. I never watch those things but this time, it just made sense. I suddenly had a vision: as the economy tanks, people are going to need a cheap source of wool. And not only that, if you believe in global warming, it's going to freeze in N. America - just like the movie - so people will need a lot of wool.
So I did it. I took the plunge, ordered two alpacas, and began my destiny to be an alpaca farmer. Well, needless to say, my wife wasn't too happy when the alpacas arrived. Especially when she realized I had spent our savings to buy them. "This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of", she said.
But I knew it was the right thing to do. I told her to wait and see. We had a big fight.
Well, as the months went by, I've has a few problems. Like any small business. The lawsuit with my neighbors (we don't actually live on a farm), was a big one but I think I've found a new place to keep the alpacas. Then there was the issue with getting them to breed. Turns out they were both males. Who knew?
But now I've got a guy, Bill, who has some experience helping me out. My wife loves to point out that his two attempts at alpaca farming failed. But she doesn't understand that that is exactly what makes him so valuable to the alpaca team.
So my wife attacks me at every turn now. "You fucking idiot" bla bla bla. But I don't care. These alpacas are going to be our golden goose.
The bottom line is, people need to learn to have patience. Some thing take time. And I have no doubt that my alpaca farm will turn out to have been a great investment and will more than cover my daughter's college money that I had to spend to rent the pasture I now have to keep the alpacas on.
So all I can say is don't listen to all the naysayers. Tim Geithner and Larry Summers (I feel you guys) have had a lot of experience with bad economies. We just have to have patience and a little faith. That is what will get us through these hard times. Just ask Jimbo and missy Mister
