This will be a short diary, part of a series I've been writing to encourage people to phonebank for Scott Murphy, who is running against Jimmy "A Public Debate Is To Me As Garlic Is To A Vampire" Tedisco for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's old seat in NY-20.

I've made my case for why you should be phonebanking here, as well as providing instructions both for this effort and for novice (and experienced) phonebankers generally.

Please ask yourself this question: are you solely a political observer, or are you a political actor as well?  If you are an political actor, please act.  Here's the link to sign up to phonebank.

Please use it now.  Chances are that you have an hour, or even 30 minutes.  This is for a seat that we can retain in our Congress.  It doesn't matter where you live; it affects you.  You can do something about it.  We'll keep each other company today, I hope, in comments to this diary.

The election is on March 31.  We need to be out in force.  Click the link.  Start reaching out to voters.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I'll write back in a while, I am going to get a phone book for NY-20 and make some calls!

"Thank you, Gods, for Republican foot-in-mouth-Rush-apologists!"

I will write back in a while! Let's get the calls going!

Just click that link and set up an account on the DCCC server.  They've pre-selected registered voters for you; they know exactly whom they want to reach!

      •  sweet thanks, I found this as a good script (0+ / 0-)

Just hours after it was reported that Tedisco said, "Rush Limbaugh is meaningless to me," Tedisco quickly apologized to the de facto Republican leader. Tedisco follows in a long line of Washington Republicans who are too afraid to stand up to Rush Limbaugh.

"It's just like Jim Tedisco, a career Albany politician, to talk tough and then whimper an apology to Rush Limbaugh even though Limbaugh wants President Obama to fail during America's economic crisis," said Jennifer Crider, Communications Director for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Tedisco once again showed his true colors: he won't stand up to Republican leader Rush Limbaugh, he certainly won't stand up for Upstate families worried about keeping their jobs."

        •  You should go with the general ideas in the (7+ / 0-)

          script that is provided.

People DO NOT LIKE NEGATIVITY.  The one woman I did reach actually said as much - she is "tired of all the back and forth.  If all the Republicans can do is be negative, she" is with Murphy.  I have posted before about the VERY negative campaigns run against Gillibrand - people in this district have had so much of this in the last several years.

Also, You do not even want to be saying Tedisco's name.  You want to say Scott's name, and say it as many times as you can.

Mind you, when I first began talking with this woman and said I wanted to make sure whe was aware of the election, she laughed.  I said, oh, of course, with all the tv ads and radio ads - she responded, 'and the mailings, I get 4 pieces a day at least'.  Living in a neighboring district, I had forgotten about those - though I had heard as much.

So, the most important thing is to present a positive, friendly, sympathetic persona to people so they will associate that with Scott Murphy.

The way I look at it is this: I'm not volunteering to be their campaign messaging consultant.  I'm volunteering to give them phone calls that come from a warm body on the other end of the line rather than from a robot, because people appreciate that.  But the choice of message is, in my opinion, theirs.

Now if someone asks me questions, then the DCCC assumes the risk that I will answer them as I see fit, and then I might get into things like that (although personally I'd use a very light touch if I mentioned the blow-up with Limbaugh, just as a humorous aside.)  But I probably wouldn't even do that.

It's frustrating to be a pawn when you think that you're as good as strategy as the higher-ranking pieces, but this game will be won with pawns.  I'm willing -- hard as it is for me to do something that doesn't come naturally to me! to be a pawn in a good cause and do it their way.  (But I will send them e-mails if I think that they're screwing something up, and might even do my own thing if I think they're screwing up royally.)

Note that, in the Obama campaign, I was told that I could have more of a free reign with messaging.  (I don't know if it was true, but that's what I was told.)  I acted accordingly, because some people in some states really wrote horrible pitches.

door to get some work done in my nursery, I went over, logged in, checked out the issues and made 6 calls (4 machines, 1 not interested, 1 supporter).

I will try to make at least a few calls a day.

For those who are hesitant, I too am always nervous picking up the phone BUT kept getting over it during President Obama's campaign, and, although it is still always tough to get started - it does get easier!

As far as the script, I look at it but modify it to have a better, natural flow - I find it very stilted.  I also throw in that the election is "TUESDAY March 31st, that is a week from next Tuesday" (they don't mention the day in the script).

As for line about sending Scott Murphy to Congress to work with President Obama to get our economy moving again, I add " instead of someone who is only going to try to obstruct everthing the President is trying to do"

If leaving a message, I repeat the day and date, ask for their support and ask them to remind their friends.

Jump in - the water is fine!

but I try to make it even less something that could be taken as a personal attack on Tedisco by saying "we want someone to work with Obama to fix the economy, not against him -- we can't afford that right now."  That seems to my eyes subtly like it's more about characterizing Murphy's position, less about predicting what Jimmy Disco as his opponent will do if he wins the race.

You sound like you're doing a great job!  Thanks!

    •  That is all very good advice. (2+ / 0-)

And don't get too aggravated if you go through 5 or 10 calls before you get to a live human to canvass.  Those are the true gold, and educating them and hopefully swaying them into the "strong Murphy" or "leaning Murphy" classification is what this process is all about in this last 10 days before the election.

Also, don't be afraid to say you don't know the answer if you actually do not, sending them to either of the following for more details is just as good:
