When I was a young lad, the boys used to sing a rowdy ballad entitled "Cigareets, Whusky and Wild, Wild Women (They'll drive you crazy - they'll drive you insane.)"
Despite getting through school without completely losing my grasp on reality, the lyrics stayed with me well enough to cause me to avoid bingeing or becoming a two-pack a day fiend. I still pursued women, but carefully. In those days, I went to church occasionally and heeded the additional warnings of various pastors and, later, pastoresses. After all, America was one nation under God and God didn't like sin, especially sin that made lots of money.
In 2006, Americans managed to put away a little over 101 million gallons of beer, six million gallons of wine and about five million gallons of spirits. We spent over a hundred billion dollars on tobacco and another hundred billion on pornography.
Interesting how what was once a rowdy song has become a national motto.......
