I didn't come up with the subject, instead I happened to come across it on Michael Savage's website, and I more or less found it to be an interesting take, if nothing for the generational differences introduced in this commentary.
Michelle Obama is now in Europe with her husband. The media seems to be trying to make her into another Jackie Kennedy. But Jackie Kennedy lived in another world.
First off, I happen to agree with the latter statement that Jackie Kennedy lived in another world. Jackie Kennedy has as much impact to me as the Queen of England in 1337 AD. Michelle Obama is a different story, because this is someone who I - and people of my generation - know at a level much deeper than a historical footnote. Sure, we don't know her personally, but at the same time, I doubt Mickey Savage hung out with Jackie Kennedy either. For people of my generation, Jackie Kennedy is someone who is way before our time, and we connect to things that existed "in our time" a lot more than things that didn't. America's future generations will probably start viewing 9-11 like my generation views Pearl Harbor.
SO WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MICHELLE OBAMA AND JACKIE KENNEDY?
· JACKIE KENNEDY WAS BORN IN SOUTHAMPTON, NEW YORK, MICHELLE OBAMA WAS BORN IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
· JACKIE KENNEDY WENT TO VASSAR AND GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY. MICHELLE OBAMA WENT TO PRINCETON.
Could someone tell me what the point of this is? I fail to see it.
· JACKIE KENNEDY WAS RAISED TO BE A SOCIALITE. MICHELLE OBAMA WAS RAISED TO BE AN ANTI-SOCIALITE SOCIALIST.
· JACKIE KENNEDY EXUDED PRIDE IN AMERICA. MICHELLE OBAMA SAID THE FIRST TIME SHE WAS PROUD OF AMERICA WAS WHEN HER HUSBAND STARTED DOING WELL IN THE POLLS.
I guess now we get to the core of his comparisons. And with that established:
Who will be remembered as the better role model for the girls and young women of America?
Following his list of comparisons, the answer's pretty obvious. But again, Michael Savage has seen and experienced both in his lifetime. I haven't. I can't say that much about Jackie Kennedy, but I can say a few things about Michelle Obama, and I'm sure that young women today feel much the same way. Also, one thing to keep in mind is that history books present things to people much differently than experiences.
While I'm sure that Michelle Obama will never be the next Jackie Kennedy (or be what she was to my grandparents' generation), at the same time, both happen to be inspiring figures for the next generation of women in America.
I know, I'll be asking the same question about a future First Lady (or President) when I'm old, washed up, and realize life has passed me by...
Anyway, it's time to do my part to help stimulate the economy. And no, I'm not getting paid for this:
