The Iowa Supreme Court has posted the following on its website:
Media Advisory
Des Moines, April 2, 2009— The Iowa Supreme Court opinion in Varnum v. Brien is expected to be posted on the Iowa Judicial Branch website by 8:30 a.m. Friday, April 3.
I will probably get in trouble for the brevity of this diary, but wanted to let folks know this is coming tomorrow, and didn't see an open thread to post it in.
It sounds like there are four ways the court could proceed:
Uphold the ruling, supporting marriage equality.
Uphold the ruling, but look to the state legislature for a remedy. (I worry that this has the potential to go poorly, and I hope it isn't left up to the legislature to pass marriage legislation.)
Return the case to the lower court.
Deny marriage equality for gay couples.
Fingers crossed they do the first!
