We have been working as the Elk Grove Village Township Democracy Club in Cook County Illinois for the past several years to form a group that has some real impact in our area. This has been very difficult with little to no support from the local powers. If you are in our area/township and interested, please come Thursday night, April 16. Christine Cegelis will be one of our speakers.
This is the press release that has been sent to the local newspapers. Please join us. I posted this earlier this week, but hope to reach more people.
(Mount Prospect, IL) –Building Grassroots Democracy from the Precinct Up. That is the theme of the next meeting of the Democracy Club of Elk Grove Township on Thursday, April 16, 7 p.m. at the Elk Grove Township Hall, 2400 S. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for set-up and a social period. Family, friends, neighbors and the general public are welcome and encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served.
The speakers are:
Bob Peikert, Chairman of the DuPage County Democratic Organization. Bob built a grassroots organization that won control of the DuPage County Democratic Organization and which has started winning seats in the traditional Republican bastion of DuPage County.
Former Illinois State Representative Lauren Beth Gash, Chair of the 10th Congressional District Democrats. Lauren leads a highly active group of volunteers who have helped to elect Democrats in the traditionally Republican North Shore.
Christine Cegelis, former Democratic candidate in the Sixth Congressional District. Her campaigns attracted the most volunteers the area had ever seen. She surprised the nation when she came within striking distance of defeating longtime powerhouse Republican Congressman Henry Hyde.
The Democracy Club was inactive the last couple years hoping that the new Elk Grove Township Democratic Chairman, Brian McPartlin, would build a grassroots membership organization that would hold regular public meetings. Because he has not done so, and especially because he failed to capitalize on the unprecedented level of support for the Obama presidential campaign, the Democracy Club is resuming its schedule of regular monthly public meetings.
The club's leadership expects Christine Cegelis to declare her candidacy for two offices in the February 2010 Democratic Primary Election: she is expected run for Democratic State Committeewoman for the Sixth Congressional District, and to run for Elk Grove Township Democratic committeeman.
The Democracy Club of Elk Grove Township is an independent Democratic Club, which includes Liberals, Conservatives, Progressives, Moderates and Independents. The mission of the Club is to recruit volunteers to get well qualified Democrats nominated and elected, and to lay the groundwork for a permanent outlet for local, grassroots action. The club meets the third Thursday of each month at the Elk Grove Township Hall, 2400 S. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. For information email rkentkirkwood @ wowway.com
