A greater threat to their sanity(!) and world view is working its way through the scientific system, and this will threaten to become even more dangerous to them than evolution. I speak of what neuroscience, neurophysiology and molecular biology are doing to concepts of mind, consciousness, and soul. Check out a recent letter to the journal Science by Martha J. Farrah and Nancey Murphy (27 Feb 09, Vol. 323, p. 1168).
The soul is a metaphysical fabrication that was created by ancient Greek philosophers and was adopted by the Scholastic Philosophers in the Church as a linchpin of their entire theology. The concept underlying the soul is based on a supposed dichotomy between matter and form, where matter is amorphous until it is infused with a form, like a sculptor working on a block of marble. The form is a separate entity from the matter and transcends it, like the immortal soul, infused “at the moment of conception” in all humans. I could go on, but you guys can follow through on this to your satisfaction.
All available work on neurophysiology indicates that the entire array of human intellectual faculties resides in biochemical reactions in the brain and the rest of the body. Moods and emotions can be produced and reproduced by chemical messages, or by electrical stimulation of the nervous system. The bottom line is that the body-mind distinction is rapidly disappearing, just as the “god of the gap” disappeared when scientific explanations of physiological and evolutionary processes put the squeeze on religious interpretations of life processes. So be prepared for a parallel universe where what the authors call “nonmaterialist neuroscience” joins “intelligent design” to explain away reality.
