My friend (and fellow NN board member) Arshad Hasan, executive director of Democracy for America, likes to send emails:
What are you doing this August? I know where I'm going to be and I want you to join me.
The Netroots Nation convention has become the one event each year you just can't miss. This year's convention is in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from August 13 to 16.
Last year, DFA and Netroots Nation launched a one of a kind scholarship competition. Instead of just sponsoring the event in the traditional way, we used our funds to send a group of progressive activists who had proven their skills, but may not have had the resources to get there on their own. The competition was such a success; we sent 30 great progressive leaders on a DFA Netroots Nation Scholarship.
This year, we're doing it again. If you or someone you know should get a scholarship, either because they've earned it, need it, or both -- now is the time to apply.
APPLY FOR YOUR SCHOLARSHIP RIGHT NOW
The competition is a fun way to show off who you are and what you've done to move America forward. It's also a great way to help make sure you have the resources to attend. And over the next couple of months, progressives nationwide will have a chance to voice their support for you and help you earn your scholarship.
The scholarship covers the cost of admission and lodging -- all you have to do is apply and win.
THE COMPETITION STARTS TODAY - APPLY NOW
This is one event that you don't want to miss. The fourth annual gathering of the netroots community will include panels and caucuses led by national and international experts; prominent political, issue and policy-oriented speakers; a progressive film screening series and the most concentrated gathering of high-profile progressive bloggers to date.
In 2008, Governor Dean helped kick it off with a powerful keynote address. I moderated a "debate" between Markos Moulitsas from DailyKos.com and Harold Ford from the Democratic Leadership Council. (Markos won if you ask me). And Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi held a two hour Q&A that made national news and ended the entire event with a bang.
Democracy for America will be all over the convention providing trainings and organizing panels. Last year, we even had our own hospitality suite where candidates and other special guests like Rep. Donna Edwards stopped by and mingled one-on-one with DFA members.
I can't wait for what we have planned this year. That's why we have a second way for you to come and join us in Pittsburgh. ...

The fall of 2009 will be remembered for the incredible work we'll do fighting to pass the important changes that America needs. Let's kick it off together in Pittsburgh.
I hope to see you there.
Take a look at last year's winners -- what an impressive group of activists!
One more thing: if you're not in a position where you should be receiving a scholarship, I hope you're in a position to support one. DFA is asking each of us to give at least $30 for 30 scholarships, and I hope you'll join me in doing so. This is an exceptional program which deserves your support.
