I watched the stars appear yesterday and it was only natural that I should watch the stars disappear this morning. To my great delight the crescent moon was alongside the crescent Venus. I finally had a chance to use my telescope and Venus looked beautiful, a tiny bright little crescent, and Jupiter was beautiful, a small circle with two bands and four moons visible.
This is the Universe in which I live.
I was surrounded by birds, manatees, plants and water. There's no place like the Earth. What a beautiful planet. Unique in the Universe and alone. There's life nowhere else. So I encourage everyone to treasure the Earth and in particular the living Earth.
Ultimately, of course, the Earth will take care of itself. After four billion years my confidence in the Earth is rock solid. Humankind, on the other hand, isn't taking good care of either itself or its home. After 10,000 years of the destruction, violence and progress along a dead-end path there is little reason for confidence in humankind.
Who shall redeem humankind? Who will save humankind from itself? Who will teach peace to humankind?
God would do all of these things ... if God existed.
