I did a double take last night when I took a look at the opinion page of my hometown newspaper. I grew up in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley; always has and most likely always will be conservative country. Can't remember the last Democratic representative we had on the state or federal level.
The editorial board of the local paper has always been a reliable parrot of those GOP views. Thus, imagine my surprise when I read their take on the spectacle of our former Vice President continuing to salivate over the use of torture:
"We sense our honor crumbling.
. . .
We broke our own code when we allowed detainees to be tortured, through water-boarding, depriving them of sleep and more. When we were inhumane to others, we reduced our home humanity. We hobbled our ability to demand humane treatment of our soldiers and nationals. Any useful intelligence we received, if there was any, pales in comparison to the damage done
Mr. Cheney, it doesn't matter what "productive" results have been obtained. Torture is illegal. It cannot be tolerated in or by our United States of America."
It just goes to show how far out of the mainstream Cheney and his minions are. If they are turning on him in the Valley, his bunker must be an increasingly lonely place to be.
