Yes, it sucks for our progressive friends in Texas to be stuck with a secessionist as Governor, but dems da breaks...
The hypocrisy and irony are on display again, as it was recently uncovered that as Rick Perry was declaring TX ready to go its’ own way, his state was FIRST in the nation in federal assistance from declared disasters since 2001:
During Perry's tenure -- 2001 to the present -- FEMA alone has sent $3.45 billion to Texas. $3,449,142,397 to be exact. That figure does not include funding from any other federal agencies (of which there is plenty), nor does it include funding for Hurricane Ike recovery, which is still ongoing.
To get a sense of how much federal money goes to Texas every time a disaster strikes, consider the numbers in this FEMA press release from earlier this month: since Ike made landfall in September 2008, Texas has received over $2 billion in disaster relief funding from various federal agencies.
And just this past week, Perry requested close to 40,000 doses of anti-viral medication from the CDC.
Of course, it is patently ridiculous to say that the people of Texas don’t deserve the necessary medication or funding from FEMA when hurricanes or other disasters strike. But it is even more absurd for Perry and those who support him to talk about secession when the state has (rightfully) benefitted from so much Federal money over the past few years when disaster struck.
