There's always something out in RightWingistan to scare the good folks into bemoaning the fate of us all. I've just received notice of the next great one beginning to circulate...a Youtube video called "Muslim Demographics".
This is a quest for more information.
A friend of mine e-mailed this Youtube link:
http://www.youtube.com/...
She received it from a Southern Baptist friend of hers.
This is so new Snopes is currently researching it: http://www.snopes.com/...
The movie throws around a lot of statistical data which at this point, I do not know is true or false. Of course, it then does the typical "take stat and run to worst possible conclusion" trick that groups of all stripes tend to do. (Even activist groups I often agree with will do this to the long-term detriment of their credibility.)
I've done some brief research. Some of the sources this video claims are so difficult to read I couldn't make them out. A couple of them I did make out:
"Global Jihad Lifting the Veil on Islam" is a report that I found linked at www.bayside.org and www.tldm.org. 'TLDM' stands for "The Last Days Ministry."
Yeah, you can already see where this is coming from.
Lots of "scare" phrases and quotes.
France will be an Islamic country in 39 years.
40% of Russia's army is Islamic.
Germany will be a Muslim state by 2050
That last one does actually seem to have been made by a German government agency, the German Federal Statistics Office. But I couldn't find enough to know the context of the statement, which is always important on these things.
The genesis for a lot of this stuff seems to be coming from Europe, particularly far-right government groups lead by le Pen of France and Dewinter of Belgium. The Brussels Journal is quoted in the video. Its a "Dobbsian" anti-immigration paper.
I believe they originate the stuff, and then conservative Protestant and Catholic groups, like the ones who obviously made this film, pick it up and run with it as a call for Christian crusaders to go evangelize the world..."before its too late!" I especially love the dread and horror at the end about "Muslims evangalizing the world"...before the video turns around and begs its viewers to do the same for Christianity!
So...if anyone is more knowledgeable of the data thrown around in this film...whether its legit and distorted, totally made up BS, or just legit, feel free to add your 2 cents. I'm mainly interested in finding just how accurate the statistics are..or are not, and publicizing corrections.
