A member of the Republican National Committee told me Tuesday that when the RNC meets in an extraordinary special session next week, it will approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the "Democrat Socialist Party."
The once mighty Republican party that ruled the nation and the world during the era of Bush & Co. is now a small (21% affiliation), mostly Southern, mostly white, mostly male, mostly christianist, mostly ultra-right wing sect. Adding to that problem is that it is totally leaderless. For all the hooting about Rush Limbaugh being their leader, we all know that's just a brickbat we throw at the Repugs as they race by on their way to nowhere.
What we are witnessing, however, is the greatest epistemological battle between good and evil not seen since Lucifer's fall from Heaven. And we are readily aware of who the players are on both sides. To put it in less apocalyptic terms, it is a battle over the definition of what is Republicanism. On the one side, we have what I choose to believe are decent, honest, patriotic men and women who were relegated to the sidelines during the past eight years and could only impotently witness the transformation of the Reagan Republican party into a oligarchy that ruled through threats and fear. The rulers of this Neo-con inspired empire believed that they were all-powerful, all-wise, and certainly above the law both domestic and international. Those are the other side of the battle who having lost their seats of power with no one to protect them from the bright hot light being shined on their perfidies and crimes, are desperately scrambling to save themselves from prosecution and investigation by proclaiming far and wide how their actions kept America safe no matter the cost to its honor, dignity, or respect in the world. And that they alone can continue to guarantee the security of the nation.
For the moment, the Evil side seems to be winning the battle. But it would be a Pyrrhic victory at best. They will only have succeeded in solidifying their image as the party of negativity where the order of the day is always the same...fear and smear. They still choose to ignore the reality that day after day, their political ideology causes more and more people to reject them and move to either the Democrats or become Independents.
Contrary to one of their "beliefs", all things evolve. And I think that within the next decade we will see a new party emerge based upon a form of political eclecticism which will be politically and ideologically centrist and could quickly become the second major political party in this country.
