William A. Donohue, the perennially indignant president of the Catholic League for Civil and Religious Rights, had no sooner finished a conference call with reporters Wednesday, in which he demanded the firing of a new White House aide, when CNN called.
It has been a busy week for Mr. Donohue, a contentious and unofficial enforcer of Roman Catholic sensibilities who can grate on enemies and friends alike with his immense ability to be offended on behalf of his church.
"This is fantastic," said Mr. Donohue, 61, with a gap-toothed smile that he rarely shows on television. "I can’t get enough of it."
Before taking up the cause, Mr. Donohue, a divorced father of two grown children who lives in Mineola, on Long Island, was a sociology professor at La Roche College, a Catholic college in Pittsburgh.
I suspect that over the last 16 years many of you have had the unfortunate fate of being subjected to this dick's shtick on either CNN, MSNBC, or Fox whenever the producers felt they needed to inject a little religious bigotry into the day's programming. And their go-to-guy is always Bill Donohue. He seems to be the only person on earth other than Henry the Eighth of England to hold the title of "Defender of the Faith". Of course, that title has been self-anointed.
Yes indeed, nothing says "God is Love" more than this loud-mouthed, anti-gay, anti-Jew, anti any religion other than Roman Catholicism blowhard. But it's quite some act he's got going. He huffs and puffs and rants and raves and literally turns bright red in the face. One finds oneself waiting with breathless anticipation for him to have a massive stroke or coronary right there on national TV. Now wouldn't that be a coup for some lucky news anchor!
But the best part of this piece in today's NY Times (the premiere anti-Catholic newspaper in America according to Billy boy himself...go figure) is that this protector of all Catholic faith and morals who wields his terrible rhetorical great sword against a woman's right to choose, gay rights, and contraception and is first on his feet to slay anyone who speaks one word against his Church, it turns out that Mr. Bill is divorced.
Funny. But as an ordained RC deacon (ex), I always thought the Church didn't allow divorce. Maybe he got a special dispensation from one of the popes. You know. Just like Henry the VIII did.
