It's simple:
There are just too many other important things that need to be done. Nothing we can do about the torture and the lies that got us into the Iraq war, or any of that other stuff. That's all in the past. Dwelling on that would just be a distraction from the important things. So let's just forget about all that and get on with what really matters.
(UPDATE: Ok, this is a message to people who've already read this diary. Everyone else should skip this until you HAVE read it, so as not to "spoil the ending." So, to anyone who's already read it, let's continue... Several people didn't get the snark at first. That's fine. But a few people are also confused by one particular point. They know I'm saying we should prosecute no matter what, but they think that maybe I'm saying I think we should prosecute INSTEAD OF doing the other things. That is NOT what I believe! I think we should -- and CAN -- do it all at once. In fact, I think once the prosecutions get going and the evidence starts to mount, especially showing the connections between torture and the Iraq war lies, the support for the Repug Party will drop like a rock. Almost NOBODY will be willing to continue to proclaim their support for Bush. And at that point, the Dems will be MUCH stronger, making it all that much easier to get their agenda pushed through. That's what I believe, anyway.)
What really matters...
Like... universal heathcare
Like... energy independance
Like... affordable higher education
Like... a cleaner environment
Like... stablizing the economy
It's a known fact that it's virtually impossible to accomplish any of that if we're also trying to investigate and prosecute war crimes of our former leaders. So we need to just move on and put the past behind us. We need to concentrate all our efforts on getting our agenda pushed through Congress and signed into law. Imagine how much this country will change if we do that...
By not prosecuting, we'll be more likely to get universal health care passed.
By not prosecuting, we'll be more likely to greatly improve our energy independance.
By not prosecuting, we'll be more likely to get affordable higher education for anyone who wants it.
By not prosecuting, we'll be more likely to be able to clean up the environment.
By not prosecuting, we'll be more likely to stabilize and strengthen the economy.
Just imagine!
If, instead of investigating and prosecuting Bush, Cheney, and their buddies, we do the important things, here's where we'll be:
We'll be a nation that is really healthy, doesn't have to worry about the price of oil anymore, is becoming super intelligent, a nation that has nice, clean water and air, and no longer has to worry about inflation or the next recession...
... and we'll be a nation that has TOTALLY lost its moral compass and has NO moral standing in the world.
... we'll be a nation that actively and proudly harbors and protects war criminals.
