I hadn't seen this diaried (much to my surprise), but if I'm wrong, please let me know and I'll delete...
On my ride into work today, I heard excerpts from John Legend's moving commencement address at the University of Pennsylvania - words that I know many here will find moving and compelling. Hard to believe at this time there's less than 700 views on Youtube...
(It really gets cooking at about 5:45)
Excerpts transcribed below...
Too often in business and in government, people are rewarded for having the answer that the person they report to WANTS them to have;
"Yes sir, we can provide mortgages to people who have no down payment and can't afford the monthly payments"
"Yes, sir, we should buy the cheapest possible toys from factories with low safety standards and not worry if it poisons our children"
"Yes, ma'am, I can write a legal brief to justify torture"
Too often we become apathetic. We see the lies, we see the obfuscation, the deception. But we fail to point it out.
We're afraid to rain on the parade. Afraid to rock the boat. Afraid to pursue the truth.
Searching for the truth is the same as searching for your soul.
Legend does a great job invoking the leadup to the War in Iraq, the use of torture, the "with us or with the terrorists" mindest, and corporate bailouts - but also makes a not-so-subtle endorsement of President Obama in this eloquent, inspiring speech that also quotes Cornell West, James Joyce and Toni Morrison.
Check it out - you will not regret it!
