President Barack Obama showed leadership and foresight in announcing he will construct an indefinite preventive detention system that would establish a legal basis for the United States to incarcerate terrorism suspects that are deemed a threat to national security but cannot be tried.
Unfortunately, some well-respected Progressive pundits that should know better see President Obama’s new plan as an opportunity to jump all over our leader, like this:
To these and all the other Obama-bashers, we say this: What President Obama is proposing actually does our current justice system one better. Instead of just waiting for the crime to actually happen and for innocent Americans to become victims of these terrorists yet again, Obama will capture and detain these terrorists before the crime even occurs. As an added benefit, there will be no trial expenses for these terrorists, since no trial is needed. We get to lock up a terrorist, before he or she commits his or her sordid and depraved crime, while costing taxpayers nothing in trial expenses.
In his historic and major speech on national security yesterday at the hall of records, Obama proved he has even more backbone and leadership ability than Bush and Cheney. Bush was too weak to even propose what Obama proposed yesterday. Now, what was all that about Obama not being able to lead?
But it was the way Obama announced his plan for indefinite preventive detention without trial that showed our man’s true genius. He couched his announcement in a soaring and lofty tribute to our great nation and its principals of rule of law and read his speech in the very place those sacred documents are housed - the hall of records. Genius.
It’s time we all get behind our leader on this plan. Nay-saying and criticism like Ms. Maddow’s is just not helping.
