One thing that perturbs me about Republicants is that they are wholly inconsistent in their views across domains. One day, they complain about "big government"; the next day, they are pulling a Terry Shiavo on the people.
In light of the pending battle over any Obama nomination to the Supreme Court, I suggest redirecting the debate and putting the opposition on its heels...with a little help from the bible.
Whenever a Republicant even mentions "Original Intent," the other party in the conversation should immediately ask the question:
"Do you believe the Bible is the Word of God?"
Immediately, this puts the Republicant on the defensive, if the individual says, "No." naturally s/he is up a creek come election time. If the individual says, "Yes." then this leads immediate to the follow up suggestion:
"Then you will join me in the stoning of Newt Gingrich, John McCain and David Vitter, correct? All of these men are adulterers, violating the seventh commandment. GOD's commandment."
Naturally, the individual will try to backpedal, claiming the comment has nothing to do with the Supreme Court discussion. This is where you pounce:
"You are claiming that the 'Original Intent' of a man-made document--the Constitution--but refuse to acknowledge the 'Original Intent' of a god-made document--the Bible. Don't you see a problem with this? You cannot be a supporter of 'Original Intent' interpretation of the Constitution, if you will not support 'Original Intent' interpretation of the Bible. You cannot."
As soon as the individual begins to speak, one should interrupt, saying:
"Lev. 19:27 forbids you from trimming your hair around your temples, which you clearly do. Should we stone you to death now, or wait until after the show ends?"
More bluster....
"Why don't you own slaves? Lev. 25:44 states that you can possess them...."
Again, they will bluster....
"Why don't you believe in the 'Original Intent' of the Bible? You are a hypocrite, sir/ma'am. That's why."
Here are a couple of nice articles on "activist judging" by conservatives.
Psst ... Justice Scalia ... You Know, You're an Activist Judge, Too
So Who Are the Activists?
