I am absolutely giddy. I think I am even happier today than I was on November 5th, 2008.
A Hispanic Woman has been nominated to the Supreme Court of the United States of America. What does this mean for me and the other Hispanic American Women out there? I'll tell you.
We get to pull up our chairs and sit at the official table.
I dedicate this diary to those women in my life who influenced the way I feel today. To those women who kept pulling the chair out from under me and to those who kept pushing me forward.
To my Grandmother who worked as a "Rosie the Riveter." Her doctors thought she got her breast cancer from the planes she would climb into at the end of WWII.
To my Mother who was ostracized by her own Mother when she married my Dad. Dad was too brown for their family.
To my sixth grade teacher, Miss Savage, who didn't treat me different, like most of my other elementary school teachers. She didn't see the color of my skin. She saw my raw potential and encouraged me to be the best I could be.
To my ex Mother-in-Law who was disappointed that her son married a brown girl. So disappointed that she was hesitant to let me sleep in her home when we would go visit. I wish she were alive to see this historical nomimation.
To my daughters. Hopefully you won't have as many roadblocks as I have had. Hopefully you will be able to actually eat a meal at the table while engaging in the conversation being had.
To all of the other Hispanic women who have contributed in their own way to this nation. Whether they are house cleaners, librarians, students, garment makers, home makers, school teachers, mentors, scientists, attorneys or engineers. This day is special for all of them.
Finally, to Sonia for her hard work and personal perseverance.
Thank you.
