My partner and I are one of the "privileged" 18,000 LGBT married couples left in California. We had a bitter day watching as all our friends who have not found the right person, or simply had bad timing, lost their rights. We are now on a small island with 17,998 more people watching two new groups of people: Prop 8 marriages and "the rest". We are ANGRY, HURT, and SICK of the broken Calfornia and Federal systems.
I could honestly care less about who the next Supreme Court nominee is, because I trust Obama. If she doesn't get voted in, then he will have someone just as fabulous ready in the wings. (I love her bio & possibilities by the way)
I just spent most of today in shock, and I discussed with my partner how hollow our own marriage feels. Yes, we don't regret it, but our entire community was dealt a huge blow today. I don't CARE about those who claim we will repeal it, or we will fight, or whatever. I have seen all day apologists and lawyers giving various pieces of advice and counsel on how this is "not the end of our fight" or "we can fix this in the next election".
NO LEADER IS SPEAKING FOR US! NO BIG MONEY IS WILLING TO DO WHAT COUNTS: FINANCE A HIGH-LEVEL, SMART CAMPAIGN.
We are a minority... we are getting legislated into oblivion by an arbitrary, capricious, broken state constitution. What's next for the popular vote? How about we outlaw any hair color but your natural hair color? Why don't we outlaw travelling in any vehicle that is not 100% run on non-petroleum products?
I DON'T CARE that this is a state issue. I DON'T CARE that the federal supremes are ruled by a bunch of bigots. WE ARE BEING LEGISLATED INTO THE MINORITY... AGAIN. Federal and State Laws need to CHANGE. For God's sake, we still don't have a federal hate crimes law yet (that includes LGBT people)!!!!
You know that old movie with the crazy guy yelling, "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not taking it any more!!!"? That is US RIGHT NOW.
Equal protection took a back seat today, and seperate but equal is now even more defined in our state's consituation than ever before. Seperate but Equal is now written into our state constituion and approved by our Supreme Court.
Sorry if you take offense to anything in this diary, but I am sick of this. Yes, we will continue to donate every dime of our hard earned money, and every minute we have to spare to this cause. It rings so hollow today, though, and I am SICK OF IT. I am SICK of crying and seeing my partner and friends cry over something so simple: our right to love and be treated the same as "everyone else".
Out on the island of 18,000.... 18,000 Rosa Parks who were brave, and now having to represent all the ones who couldn't do it "at the right time".
Sheesh.
