This isn't really much of a diary, but I want to get the thought out there. Actually, the point isn't much longer than this disclaimer, but just because I can express it concisely doesn't mean it isn't worth saying:
Dick Cheney's comment about gay marriage is a pre-emptive strike against a Federal ruling in favor of gay marriage, nothing more. He's not advocating gay rights; he's trying to undermine any attempts to create a national standard of tolerance and cloaking those attempts in the popular conservative shroud of "state's rights".
So lets cut the garbage and stop acquiescing to the idea that he's expressed a tolerant position, or even more outrageously, that he's more tolerant to the homosexual community than Obama is. I'll be the first to tell you that Obama's stances on the gay community have been disappointingly cowardly, whatever the political realities, but the folks who are claiming that Cheney is more progressive here than Obama is are just plain ridiculous.
Maybe Obama's playing long ball and maybe not. I honestly don't have the patience with slow-brewed politics to tell you. In either case, criticize him if you want, but don't claim Cheney's a progressive on any damned thing.
