A fire in a government sponsored daycare in Hermosillo, Sonora has now claimed 41 lifes, all babies and toddlers. There are sure to be more deaths among the hospitalized.
I have been digging through the news stories, blog comments and stuff on TV here in Mexico and think I have a pretty good idea of what happened
The facility was in a former wharehouse, located in a colonia popular which is Mexican for slum. It had two exits, but one was padlocked. The roof was possibly made of lamina..corrogated plastic. Where the fire started is still not determined but it happened very quickly. all the babies where down for their afternoon nap when the roof collapsed in the crib room and plastic on the crib mattresses also caught on fire.
This is hard to take.
It is even worse to read that the head of the government agency, IMSS, that contracted this facility to private contractors who may have political connections is defending the inspection last month. Dr. Daniel Karam has said that they may have to review regulations and inspections.
Geez what a great idea
