According to the article, there is a new business model some doctors are trying called concierge medicine. It works by a patient paying a doctor $X per month ($39-$139) and for that month basically getting unlimited access to that doctor. Some doctors also charge uninsured patients the same as insured patients. Some doctors keep their patient count intentionally low.
Unfortunately, insurance companies have gone after solo practitioners who do this by claiming they are acting as insurance companies without complying with the state regulations for insurance companies. How dare these doctors try something innovative...
