TODAY is Ride To Work Day!
4 wheeled Kossacks, this is for you too... We 2 (and 3) wheeled Kossacks have been getting 40 miles per gallon without hybrid hassles for years. We can fit at least 4 of our bikes or scooters in the space wasted by one car. It takes one fifth the materials and energy to make a motorcycle or scooters as it does to make a car. And when we're not riding our two wheelers, we only need a large closet to park them instead of a garage. And while the folks trapped in cars are hearing about the environment on NPR, we're experiencing it- we two wheelers know all about global warming. So hop on over to the Ride to Work Day site, read the propaganda, then come back over and talk two (and three) wheelers- http://ridetowork.org
Update: Thanks for keeping the discussion going, I'm off for a ride on the Floyd B. Olson Memorial Highway... See you tonight!
I had the '83 BMW R80ST with the sidecar out for a few miles today, a visit to Juneteenth and then a run to Home Despot for fencing nails. The odometer is on it's 2nd time around but the old airhead still puts a smile on my face while getting low 30s MPG. The new '07 F800S was a third the price of a 3 Series but has the same ABS brakes and catalyticly cleaned exhaust. It'd probably do 60 MPG if I could bring myself to slow down to the speed limit... I'll settle for high 50s MPG at 70 MPH or better. The '84 BMW R65LS is in the living room resting after covering over 100,000 miles, half that hauling a sidehack. I'll bring it out if I need it. THE R100GS awaits a pulled head stud repair in my friend's storeroom in Starbuck. Meanwhile the Buell Cyclone awaits my return under the long eaves of mom's trailer in Florida, in a space I couldn't fit even half a car. Together, all 5 bikes cost about the same as a new Prius, depreciate less, the batteries are a lot cheaper to replace, and they're a lot more fun. Oh, I have cars and trucks that hide in the back of my garage too, but they're for when it's really snowy AND cold!
What's your motorcycle (or scooter) story? And where ya ridin' on Ride to Work Day? And please Rec this diary up so we can spread the motorcyclin' and scooterin' goodness all through Ride to Work Day!
