A look at Kay Hagan's OpenCongress web page shows that her single largest contributor in the 2008 election was Act Blue
Act Blue raised a whopping $1,637,639 in donations for her.
Act Blue now claims to have raised $2,389,405 for Ms. Hagan as of today.
And who made contributions to Kay Hagan through Act Blue, why it was progressives like you and me. Who is Kay Hagan caving to in the HELP committee draft of health care legislation? The health industry, who according to OpenCongress raised 10 % of what was raised on Act Blue.
UPDATE: User Scott Zumwalt, who was Kay Hagan's online communications director, posted 4 diaries on Daily Kos during the campaign, as well as comments. Paging ScottZumwalt... If we were good enough to listen to your pro-Hagan diaries, can you jump into this discussion and explain Kay Hagan's stance on Public Option? Kay Hagan directed you to solicit us and our enthusiasm and our money -- we would like a response. h/t Silence is Complicity. Thanks!

Seems like the folks here at Daily Kos really, really rallied around Sen. Hagan, especially when Elizabeth Dole called Hagan "godless". Seems too like Sen. Hagan might have benefitted from one Barack Obama (who supports a public option) in North Carolina, whose volunteers probably put in a good word for Sen. Hagan last fall.
Just doing a quick search on the archives at Daily Kos from 1 year ago to 3 months ago using these terms: "kay hagan donate" resulted in 76 stories and diaries. For "kay hagan atheist" -- 27 stories and diaries.
The diaries I opened up in the search results all had a link to the Act Blue page (I didn't open all the links)
Then I recall Kos' "leave it on the road" story inspiring us all to pitch in volunteering for the Dems, I'm sure prompting some North Carolinians to make an extra effort for Ms. Hagan.
And, that's just Daily Kos. I haven't jumped into the other blogs' archives, but my memory tells me that MyDD, OpenLeft, Firedoglake, etc., etc., all had their fair share of Hagan stories and Act Blue links.
Now Act Blue does have a donate link to all Democrats, even the shitty ones like Kay Hagan aspires to become. But, according to its founder.:
In creating ActBlue, we envisioned ourselves helping fellow progressives build the small-donor fundraising force Democrats need to fight back against the corporate money that fuels the GOP and stymies progressive change. But why be so general as to help support all Democrats? Why not restrict the use of ActBlue's fundraising tools so they could only be used to support specific, vetted candidates we like? If this is really such powerful stuff, why not wield our fundraising platform as a super-duper carrot-and-stick machine?
We've chosen to instead make ActBlue an honest broker because we believe that the best Democratic Party, and the best government as a whole, can only be achieved when every part of the political process -- including fundraising -- is conducted according to the greatest aspirations of our democracy. Only by changing the rules of the game can the competition for political influence be won by those who best represent the interests of the public as a whole.
In a Democratic movement with truly democratic fundraising, every Democrat with the courage to throw his or her hat into the ring -- regardless of issue positions, previous endorsements, or chance of success -- has the opportunity to pitch themselves and make their ask to everyone who wants to make a difference. And every person involved in our movement has the technology and organizing resources to gather like-minded individuals together and build political power. Our approach at ActBlue is backed by a belief that if we can level the playing field, the best leaders will emerge and the best ideas will win the day.
So, Act Blue's philosophy is that the progressives will get the money if they deserve it. Well, we trusted Kay Hagan last fall. Perhaps it is time to remind Sen. Hagan of our trust in her, how much we donated to her, how much we volunteered for her, how much she benefitted from us, and how we will kick her and her BlueDog friends to the curb via apathy and redirected $$$ to the Dems who deserve the time and money. Perhaps it is time to prey on Sen. Hagan's Christian sense of guilt, service to the poor and honesty (you know, since she's not an atheist and all).
Call Kay Hagan 202-224-6342. The help she got from us will not happen again unless she changes course.
