Our small town has a great fair this weekend, which also has a parade on Saturday morning. I was going to write yesterday about the GOP here in my county - they are in the majority (for now). The teabaggers had a little booth and the GOP had their sad little elephant float, but that wasn't enough. What happened later was the kicker, for me.
Story below the fold...
I was browsing the booths, looking at some surprisingly affordable (for this kind of fair) jewelry, when I happened to overhear a remark from the booth proprietor to her friend, "You can't get ammunition these days!"
So I pipe up, as I am sometimes wont to do, "That's because people are buying it all up and they can't make it fast enough, since some people are afraid they'll lose their guns!"
They looked at me, and said, in unison, "Well they are going to take them away from us!", looking at me all wild-eyed.
"Who's 'they'?", sez I.
"Why, the government, of course!"
"I don't think so - have they tried yet?" was my reply.
"No, but they will!"
I tried to pin them down on who exactly would come and take away their guns. They said, "Well, they took them in Europe and Canada!", to which I replied, "yes, but this is the United States", thinking of my two guns I inherited from my father and all my die-hard Western Slope Democratic friends who have many guns and use them often (for hunting and target shooting, as well as personal protection). Yeah, try and take those away.
Well, I kind of lost it. I couldn't shut my mouth like I usually do, I looked right at them and said, "Hey, I am telling you right now, that is CRAZY TALK. Really. Crazy." Then I shook my head, went on, and bought an affordable, really nice necklace from another lady who had lots of peace symbols on her work. That's what I call a boycott!
I've actually been exposed to this recently a few times - my innocently asking an acquaintance how she can work for a polluting oil company and reconcile it with her Christian faith. She replied with her wish to die so she can go to heaven. Then she said, "I don't mean to preach". (Don't you worry, honey, I'm not going to listen to your crazy talk) - I said, really, you want to die and leave all God has created? Yes. Whew! I obsessed over that for a week. Then this.
We've got a lot of those types of people here in the county, I just don't usually get so close to that kind of crazy. I had to go home and watch Saturday Night Live just to change my perspective. Then I decided to be cathartic and share with my Kossack community - just how crazy and non-reality based these people are.
There! I feel better now. Thanks for listening.
