Please forgive my lack of research. I've been away from my favorite political resource community, dKos, in order to catch up on the realities of my own life.
Consider me perhaps representative of the thousands who now check in here occasionally and cannot follow the wonderful in-depth discussions that so many pour their hearts into.
The initial Obama "disappointment" is morphing into mobilization, as it always needed to be. Politicians cannot be "rescuers" unless the people are willing to "do it themselves", as I think Lao Tzu once prescribed that the wise ruler allow them to do.
The mobilization so many of us have awaited is now appearing around the possibility of Single Payer.
As much as I/we detest the bribery that is organized as campaign contributions, we know that for now, that is what moves Washington.
We now have the strongest "wedge issue" ever -- a positive one, in contrast to the Right's universally hatred-based wedgies -- that can drive home the larger changes we need. Wake up or replace the Dems who block progress, and eliminate some of the Republican proto-Fascists.
With 70+ % effectively favoring Single Payer, has anyone created a central location to aim money at pro- and anti-Single Payer legislators or their potential replacements?
My quickest googling brought up Progressive Democrats of America, but their website had no further info that I could find. Nothing else?
Individual Senators & Reps obviously try to keep funds focused toward themselves, and maybe some of them assist others who will be pro-Single Payer.
But I think, as in the Obama campaign, famous for its many $10 and $20 contributions, we have the potential to aggregate millions of small contributors out of that 70+ % of the populace. If any issue ever could, this is it.
(Individual calls to legislators' offices could also stress the financial results that you will condition upon their votes.)
How many dollars a day does a Senator or Rep have to raise for the next campaign? Turns out that's what's on their minds much of the time.
I've always been amazed at how cheaply our national legislators sell themselves. $200,000 or $300,000 for a $100 billion result? Ridiculous!
We at least ought to be able to offer them a buck or two more than that!
And if that wouldn't work, just the thought of primary challengers for some of the entrenched Dems ought to light a fire, no?
In the end, of course, the money will have to be found, once this system is in place.
We know now that we waste 4 to 8 % of our GDP on the corruptly-maintained monopoly of the medical insurance industry. This is what we are trying to correct.
Any additional funding may be found -- if we can mobilize the next round of needed courage -- in the 4-5 % of GDP wasted on the excesses of the military-industrial-media complex that has a similar corrupt lock on our public purse.
One hill at a time...
