The mighty leaders of the GOP put on a good show for the folks at home after Sarah Palin resigned as Governor of Alaska. Their "what the f**k?!" speeches following Gov. Palin’s announcement were filled with just enough sadness and amazement to appear authentic when watched on YouTube.
Well, they can’t fool me. Those crocodile tears were strictly for the benefit of the cameras as it would appear weird to the GOP faithful (and even the un-faithful) if they did not react as they did. In reality, once the Fox News and MSNBC cameras were safely sleeping for the night, there were bottles of Cristal popping all over Republican-land in celebration of Palin’s resignation.
Why the charade, you ask? On the surface, Gov. Palin was actually a pretty good figurehead to preach the GOP party platform. She is fiscally and morally conservative, is able to draw a crowd and looks good in front of a camera. She has been successful on the fundraising circuit and hasn’t been caught cheating on her spouse (watch, I just jinxed it?!).
But despite all these strengths, the GOP strategists planning in their secret evil bunker understand that Gov. Palin is not the solution to the Obama political machine. She is more of a remnant from a failed presidential bid that achieved just enough notoriety to prevent her from fading into the background as hoped. Her resignation allows her to withdraw from the spotlight and continue to perform on the GOP side stage rather than rehearsing to be the main event.
Regardless, her departure is another short-term set back for a Republican Party still licking its wounds from a beating in the 2008 elections and the loss of two high profile party members (John Ensign and Mark Sanford). Shedding these players, however, was necessary and will allow the GOP to reinvent their tarnished image over the coming years. That is, if they can find the "Republican Obama" to rally around.
