Hello, and welcome to the Labor Diary Rescue. Diaries are below the fold.
The Labor Diary Rescue is done every Monday and Thursday evening barring a bad internet connection, my insane work schedule, or Acts of God. In order to be rescued, your pro-union diary must have less than 100 comments, have the words "union" or "labor" in the tag line, and must not have been rescued by any front page diary rescue or been on the rec list.
Due to my insane work schedule, I'm cutting this a little short today. Enjoy the diaries, anyway, and remember to treat the comments section as an open thread!
Itsnotbutter writes Pope: God wants your workplace unionized! Apparently the Pope is saying that God thinks that labor unions are swell. I may be a protestant, but I'll back him on this one.
This week, Pope Benedict released the third encyclical letter of his papacy, "Charity in Truth." This is a big deal, years in preparation. An encyclical letter is the highest form of papal teaching.
This one is about the economy. Media coverage has focused on the fact that the Pope blames banks and big business for the current meltdown. But to me the real news is how strongly he supports labor unions!
Wow, thanks Pope, you rock!
Janefleming gives another horror story of union organizing and shows the need for the EFCA in Franken Stands with Nebraskans: Passing the Employee Free Choice Act
When the organizing election drew near, the trucking company did everything they could to get Doug's co-workers to rally against him. Management made phone calls to workers and issued veiled threats, held closed-door meetings and spread nasty rumors ... all in an attempt to discredit the one worker who had been most vocal in fighting for fair representation.
The same thing happened to Jerry and Bert when they tried to help organize their workplace. Their company promptly hired an anti-worker law firm and soon afterwards forced their co-workers into captive audience meetings where they were all fed empty promises and even emptier threats.
Dar Nirron gives Obama praise for one of the appointments in which he made the right choice in Obama: Friend of mine workers
As reported on the McClathcy newspapers website: Joseph Main, a safety and health administrator (retired) for the United Mine Workers of America, was chosen to head the Mine Safety and Health Aministration. Mr. Main began working in coal mines in 1967. He is currently a mine safety consultant.
